The Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Kano, Malam Yusuf Kabir, has reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to creating safer and more inclusive schools across the state through intensive Safeguarding training programmes.

Represented by the Director of Special Programmes, Nura Ibrahim, the Chairman made this known while monitoring the scale-up of the Safeguarding Short Message Training at Kafin Maiyaki Special Primary School in Kiru LGEA.

He explained that the training, funded by Kano SUBEB, is designed to equip Basic Education stakeholders with essential knowledge and skills on Safeguarding, ensuring that schools become secure spaces for effective teaching and learning.

According to him, the initiative targets 252 participants, including 112 Head Teachers and 140 Heads of Units, drawn from 28 Non-PLANE Local Government Areas across the state.

“The essence of this training is to build the capacity of our teachers and education managers on Safeguarding principles, so they can cascade the knowledge to others and promote a culture of safety in all our schools,” he said.

He further noted that the programme adopts a Train-the-Trainer (ToT) approach, where Head Teachers are empowered to step down the training to teachers within their respective schools. The training is conducted in five clusters across the state, with Kiru serving as one of the key centres.

Nura Ibrahim emphasized that Safeguarding remains critical in addressing issues such as abuse, proper reporting mechanisms, confidentiality, and creating clear referral pathways within the school system.

The training modules, he added, cover a wide range of topics, including the concept of Safeguarding, types of abuse, disclosure, the “5 Rs,” and the establishment of effective Safeguarding structures in schools.

He also highlighted that the programme is being facilitated by 20 Master Trainers who were earlier trained by a PLANE Safeguarding Consultant, ensuring quality delivery and standardization of content.

On evaluation, the Director disclosed that participants’ progress would be assessed through pre-test and post-test methods, alongside continuous monitoring templates to measure impact and effectiveness.

Nura Ibrahim expressed optimism that the training would lead to improved teacher capacity, better pupil behaviour, and increased awareness of Safeguarding practices across schools in Kano State.

He added that follow-up activities, including monitoring, mentorship, and refresher trainings, would be conducted by SUBEB Safeguarding Master Trainers and Local Government education authorities to sustain the impact of the programme.

The SUBEB representative reiterated that the initiative aligns with the Board’s broader goal of ensuring that every child learns in a safe, supportive, and protective environments
