Established in 1928, Gaya Special Primary School, located near the Emir’s Palace in Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State, remains one of the oldest and most respected public primary schools in Kano State. For nearly a century, the school has continued to shape the lives of thousands of pupils through quality basic education, discipline, and character development.
With a current enrolment of 3,659 pupils, comprising 1,972 boys and 1,687 girls, the school operates 31 classrooms under the guidance of 39 teaching staff and 6 non-teaching staff. It has consistently maintained its commitment to providing a safe, inclusive, and conducive learning environment for all children.
The school’s vision is to rank among the best primary schools in Nigeria by providing quality basic education, promoting stakeholder participation, and creating an enabling atmosphere for effective teaching and learning.
The mission focuses on achieving excellence in all subjects of the primary school curriculum while nurturing pupils through academic and extracurricular activities that prepare them for a brighter future.
Gaya Special Primary School has recorded remarkable achievements in Quiz and Debate competitions, reflecting its commitment to academic excellence beyond the classroom.
The school also promotes holistic education through clubs and societies, sports and cultural activities, safeguarding and child protection programmes, inclusive education, and active community engagement.
Available facilities include a library, ICT laboratory, playground, and water and sanitation facilities. The school also enjoys the support of a functional Parents Teachers Association (PTA) and School-Based Management Committee (SBMC), as well as Old Pupils Association (OPA) which continue to contribute to its development.
The institution, however, faces several challenges, including inadequate teaching materials, shortage of water supply, lack of electricity and solar power, insufficient non-teaching staff, inadequate pupils’ furniture, and the absence of a modern computer laboratory.
To address these challenges, the school has outlined ambitious future plans aimed at expanding its academic programmes to meet international educational standards.
Other priorities include constructing additional classrooms, establishing modern science and ICT laboratories, strengthening sports and leadership programmes, and promoting environmental sustainability through tree planting and environmental education.
The school has produced many distinguished personalities, including the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Yusuf Kabir, and Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, among other notable alumni who have contributed immensely to the development of Kano State and Nigeria.
Since its establishment, Gaya Special Primary School has been served by dedicated Head Masters whose commitment and leadership have sustained the school’s tradition of excellence.
