The Kano State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda, has stated that School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) play a critical role in the development of primary and junior secondary schools across the state.

Dr. Makoda made this known in Dutse, Jigawa State, while declaring open a two-day capacity-building workshop organized by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in collaboration with the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for members of School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) and Local Government Education Secretaries.

He explained that SBMCs contribute significantly to increasing school enrolment by bringing out-of-school children back into classrooms, improving school security, supporting infrastructure maintenance, and mobilizing communities to actively participate in the development of basic education.

The Commissioner further noted that the committees were established to serve as strategic partners of government in implementing policies aimed at improving basic education while strengthening collaboration between schools and their host communities.

In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Malam Yusuf Kabir, commended the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for its policies and programmes designed to improve the quality of basic education across the country.

He said the initiatives complement the education reforms of the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, who remains committed to providing quality education for every child in the state.

Malam Yusuf Kabir disclosed that SUBEB has provided office accommodation for the SBMC Executive Committee at the Board’s headquarters and approved a monthly allowance to support the committee’s operations and enhance its effectiveness.

He reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to sustaining close collaboration with SBMCs to further strengthen the delivery of basic education in Kano State.

The SUBEB Chairman also expressed appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his continued support for the education sector and thanked UBEC for its sustained partnership in promoting educational development in the state.

Earlier, the Coordinator of the UBEC Kano State Office, Malam Abdurrahman Musa, explained that the workshop would equip SBMC members and Local Government Education Secretaries with the knowledge and practical skills required to effectively discharge their responsibilities.

He also commended the Kano State Government, the Ministry of Education, and SUBEB for their continued support and commitment to programmes aimed at improving basic education across the state.

Speaking on behalf of the School-Based Management Committees, the Kano State Chairman of SBMC, Alhaji Tijjani Haladu Baraya, described the workshop as timely, noting that it comes at a period when the Kano State Government is implementing far-reaching reforms in the education sector. He expressed appreciation to Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf for introducing initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education across the state.

Our correspondent, Usman Da’u Isa of SUBEB News, reports that the workshop has been divided into two batches. The first batch of participants will complete the training before the second batch commences, ensuring effective participation and improved learning outcomes for all attendees.
