In an effort to strengthen community participation in school management, the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has organized a refresher training for 618 members of the School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs).

The Acting Executive Chairman of the Board, Hon. Wada Ibrahim Daho, disclosed this during an monitoring visit to one of the training centers held at Unguwa Uku Primary School in Tarauni Local Government Education Authority

Hon. Daho emphasized that the time has come for communities to fully understand the importance of their involvement in school activities.

“While the government continues to construct and renovate classrooms, provide teaching materials, furniture, and pay teachers’ salaries, there is still a need for communities to support schools in areas that require additional assistance,” he said.

He further explained that SBMCs serve as a vital link between schools and their communities by identifying school challenges and proposing practical solutions.

The Acting Executive Chairman commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for providing the necessary funds to conduct the refresher training successfully.

In his remarks, the State Chairman of the School-Based Management Committees and North-West Zonal Officer, Malam Tijjani Haladu Baraya, noted that the training came at a crucial time when the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) is strengthening community engagement mechanisms in basic education.

He appreciated the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for sponsoring the training, urging participants to use the knowledge gained to seek more support for schools beyond what government alone provides.

Speaking also, the Director, Social Mobilization, SUBEB, Balarabe Danlami Jazuli, stated that similar trainings were being conducted across five zones — Tarauni, Bichi, Rano, Gwarzo, and Wudil — covering 14 Local Government Areas.

According to him, each participating school was represented by four SBMC members — the Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, and Women Representative, in addition to Head of Social Mobilization from 14 LGEAs  and 44 Local Government Social Mobilization Desk Officers, totaling 618 participants.

He thanked the Board Executive Chairman, Malam Yusuf Kabir, for his commitment to ensuring the training was successfully conducted.

Meanwhile, in another development, the Director of Social Mobilization from UBEC, Malam Adamu Gurama, paid a visit to Abubakar Ila Primary School in Rano to monitor the ongoing training for the Rano zone.

Malam Adamu expressed delight over the state government’s commitment to community-based educational development, describing Kano as a leading state in promoting educational reforms through SBMC initiatives.

He urged participants to take the training seriously, noting that it offers them a valuable opportunity to play an active role in managing schools within their communities.

He also appreciated the invitation extended to him to witness the training firsthand, adding that he would brief the Executive Secretary of UBEC on the impressive organization and conduct of the exercise.

“I am highly impressed with what I have seen here today and will report to the Executive Secretary about the excellent arrangement and level of participation witnessed during this training,” he concluded.
