In a bid to improve the quality of English Language teaching and learning in primary schools across Kano State, the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with the Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE), has organised a six-day capacity-building training programme for English Language teachers in selected Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs).

The training, which is being implemented in Takai, Gabasawa, Minjibir and Karaye Local Government Areas, covers 115 primary schools and involves a total of 484 English Language teachers.

Speaking during a visit to one of the training centres, the Deputy National Team Leader of PLANE, Mr Samuel Achimugu, expressed satisfaction with the level of commitment shown by the resource persons and the enthusiasm displayed by the participating teachers in understanding the content of the training.

Mr Achimugu stressed that continuous professional development for English Language teachers is critical to achieving quality learning outcomes at the basic education level. He noted that equipping teachers with effective teaching strategies will significantly improve pupils’ reading, speaking and comprehension skills.

He further commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State for his dedication to revitalising the education sector and praised the Chairman of SUBEB, Malam Yusuf Kabir, for his visionary leadership and sustained efforts toward strengthening basic education in the state.

In his remarks, the PLANE State Team Leader, Malam Umar Lawan, explained that the training programme is a continuation of the capacity-building support PLANE has been providing to the Kano State Government over the past three to four years.

According to him, the initiative is designed to equip English Language teachers with modern, learner-centred teaching methodologies that will expose pupils to effective reading and speaking skills from the lower primary level before their transition to upper classes.

Malam Umar added that the six-day training exposes teachers to innovative instructional strategies aimed at improving classroom delivery and enhancing learning outcomes in English Language.

Participants at the programme expressed appreciation to SUBEB and PLANE for the training opportunity and pledged to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to improve the learning experience of pupils in their respective schools.
