The Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has organised a three-day capacity building workshop for 260 Head Teachers across the state, aimed at strengthening School Self-Evaluation (SSE) and improving the quality of basic education.

The participants were drawn from all the 44 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) in Kano State. The training is being conducted simultaneously at three clusters include Rano, Bichi, and the SUBEB Special Training Centre at Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso.

The workshop targets Primary School Head Teachers, Principals of Upper Basic Schools, as well as Head Teachers of Nomadic Schools, with a focus on enhancing leadership, accountability, teaching and learning outcomes through effective school self-evaluation practices.

Speaking during a monitoring visit to the training venues, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Malam Yusuf Kabir, who was represented by the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Malam Mu’azu Magaji, described the programme as timely and critical to achieving continuous improvement in schools.

Malam Yusuf Kabir, through his representative, emphasized that School Self-Evaluation remains a key tool for identifying strengths and weaknesses in teaching, learning, school management, and student performance. He noted that the training would equip school heads with the necessary skills to use evidence-based evaluation to improve decision-making, accountability, and overall school effectiveness.

He called on participants to take the training seriously and work hard both during and after the programme, stressing that the success of the initiative depends largely on their commitment to implementing the knowledge gained in their respective schools.

The SUBEB Chairman further urged the participants to serve as mentors and guides to other Head Teachers who could not attend the training, so that the impact of the programme would be extended across all schools in the state.

According to him, the training will also help schools prepare better for external inspections, promote quality assurance, encourage stakeholder participation, and ultimately improve pupils’ learning outcomes across Kano State.

The capacity building workshop forms part of SUBEB and UBEC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen school leadership and ensure sustainable improvement in basic education delivery in the state.

Some participants interviewed assured their readiness to put into practice lesson they leant during training.
